Oktoberfest 2011: Black Girls in Dirndls

Nicole is the New black dirndl
My first trip to Oktoberfest was in 2007. Me being me, I decided to go in style and invested in a traditional Bavarian dress called a dirndl.
Once in Munich, the dirndl made me instantly popular. I can honestly say I was the ONLY woman of color with one on that day. People were pointing and staring and some even got aggresive. (dudes and booze, meh) Luckily, my attention-whoredness paid off and I was pulled up on stage to lead the band.

Fast forward to the first day of Oktoberfest 2011, last weekend, and I saw dozens of women of color in dirndls. I even met a few black American expats! I stalked a few and asked for a picture. Check them out, they looked great!!

Dirndls are historically Bavarian and Austrian so seeing them on women of color is a treat

The dirdnl usually consists of a blouse, the bodice with a full skirt and an apron

The apron can be used as an indicator of a woman's marital status

Ladies and gentlemen, if you want to get an authentic dirndl, lederhosen and/or Bavarian accesories check out Kertins Landhausmode.
They have an amazing selection of colors, types and sizes. They ship all over the world and have great customer service. I can't recommend them enough.
Warning they can get a bit pricey but the real stuff rarely come cheap. Enjoy!

  1. Oh my goodness, I want one soo badly! You look great and oh so festive! I'm really intimidated by large events with the consumption of booze but I really liked seeing this year's array of gals sporting the dirndl! I got a history lesson just now....and it was fun!

haha. i want a new one but i totally should not spend money on one right now. maybe next year or if they have a sale. i love the dirndl. oktoberfest can get iffy. i would never go on my own, ever. especially here. people drink until failure. that is why tamer people and families head for the after 6. cause that is when stuff can get loopy. people are drinking since 10 and stuff gets out of hand.

  4. I love it! When I was in Austria, I really contemplated getting a dirindl but thought it might be too weird for a black girl to wear one, how wrong I was!

  9. Oh my gosh, I love this entry!!! I went to Oktoberfest in 2010, but I didn't have a dirndl... and that's one of my biggest regrets!!! I definitely want to get one and go back -- it's such a fun atmosphere! And look at you being the star of the show! Awesome!
