Sending The Wrong Message: Communicating With A Multicultural Audience

Offensive Nivea Campaign
In direct response to criticisms against Nivea's 'Look like you give a damn' campaign, the global brand has pulled the ad and issued an apology. A wise person once said, 'Thinking before acting often eliminates the need to apologize." The disheartening fact is, Nivea, Dove,Summer's Eve and other companies DO think, they just aren’t thinking about me. In the instances where black consumers are specifically targeted something usually goes horribly wrong.

Opera, Othello and the Practice of Blackface

This weekend the panda bear and I are invited to see the opera Othello. In my opinion, no matter which form the tale takes (opera, text, ballet or film) the themes of racism, manipulation and jealousy are consistent, making it a complex story. What makes it more complicated for me is that it is accepted practice, in opera, that the lead character of Othello is performed by a White man in blackface.

Unsolicited Condescending Health Advice

Image found on the Curvy Nerd

I suppose one of the side effects of gaining minor popularity on the internet is the exposure to all sorts of people. Some people mistake blogging, making youtube videos, or tweeting as their personal invitation into your life. In a way it is a sort of ticket to the show but is not and never will be an all inclusive backstage pass.

Recently on youtube I received a RANDOM email from a woman who mistook me for someone who not only asked for her opinion regarding my weight but valued it. She took the time to send, what she imagined, a well intentioned, thoughtful email that would surely be the key to cracking the code to my obesity and impending death. ::perma eyeroll::

A Fat Chick Who is Liked By Guys

Gansta Greeting Cards from Farewell Paperie

The Village Voice recently ran an article entitled "Guys Who Like Fat Chicks". I am sure it was an eye opener for many people. Reading terms like Fat Admirer (FA) and bi-sizual, clearly must have left some readers scratching their heads, contemplating their own preferences and evaluating their own biases against men who date larger women.

The Dancing First Lady

I simply can't express how ...what is the word? Am I proud? Shocked? Impressed? I am just wowed by the video of Michelle Obama dancing on a recent trip to a middle school in DC. She really is one of my favorite people although I have been critical about comments she has made about her own daughters during her campaign against childhood obesity.

Becoming a successful blogger

Now this is a mystery that I am hoping to uncrack, I am asking myself this after "politely" being told that my blog isn't significant enough to be sent a pair of shoes for review. Now I understand returns on investments and target audience, etc, I know I don't have thousands of subscribers. But I was prematurely snubbed, I wasn't even expecting a free pair of shoes, this is the funniest part of it all. I was hoping that I would review the shoes and get some sort of mention on their site, or twitter like ooh check out a review of our new thing-a-ma-bob by nicole is the new black.

Shame Free Blogging

It is almost 3 am on Satuday morning and I have to get some sleep but just wanted to post this image and link back to a moving post about a blogger who was recently trolled by some anon internet clown. They tried to insult her by calling her fat and "not curvy" she is striking back!

Check out the original post! Style Trumps Fashion's Arya speaks out!

Asos Curve - bleh

Image for the Leonard Nemoy Full Body Project
I used to be a die hard Asos Curve fan, I celebrated in the streets along with my fellow curvy girls when Asos Curve was introduced. The clothing was just my style, in a perfect pricepoint and shipping to Berlin is only 4 Euros. Recently I find myself struggling with Asos Curve because I have a few fundamental issues with them as an online retailer.

Apocalyptically Fat

I think the world is in need of a different version of fat. Don't let the title of the post fool you, I am not looking to upgrade fat to a catastrophic level, I am just trying to imagine the new term that the media could use to strike fear into the hearts of the average weighted citizen to emphasize that the number of fatties are growing and the new hoards will eat them at the end of days. Morbidly obese is so overused, its almost lost it's effectiveness. Okay let me backup because already this post is about to derail into 'cynical fat person land' . I should practice to not do this so early. ::FOCUS::

I was inspired to write about fat and more specifically my fatness after hearing a shocking story of a man found grafted to his couch in Ohio after two years of immobility. He was discovered marinating in his own bodily waste along with a colony of maggots. He lived in this condition with two other adults, one being his girlfriend who fed him, basically enabling his lifestyle. The witnesses on the scene described the rest of the home to be less than desirable and basically said it was a deplorable site. I tend to assume that their assessment is correct, you don't achieve one-ness with your own couch without offending the sensitivities of a few people and killing some olfactory glands. The story is perplexing to say the least but the reports as well as the comments online that I have read in response to the story have left me speechless.(Well, not quite) This is the version of fat America is comfortable with seeing. This is the version of fat that makes it easier to dehumanize fat people into faceless nameless adipose blobs that clearly have no self worth. pssf

Now I am not here to make excuses for this man, or even justify how one could "let it get that bad" but I am here to combat and present an image of fat that folks are not that comfortable with seeing. I mean, I am not dedicating my life's mission to change the world's view of fat people but I am going to put myself out there and tell you kind folks the type of fattie that I am. Throughout this blog I hope to share the aspects of my life not defined by my weight and the areas where it clearly has an impact. I know people who love me don't see me as only fat, but to ignore my size is to ignore a significant part of who I am. I am not counting calories, I am not walking around with my head hung in shame in unflattering clothes, and I am not hiding myself away in my home nurturing an intimate relationship with my armchair. I am living, laughing, loving, travelling, off roading, gyming, sauning, baking, sewing, crafting, blogging, youtubing, clubing, socializing, dating, working and doing it all loudly and with a strong sense of pride. I do all this not in pursuit of approval by the maintstream but out of love and acceptance for myself.

Hair Length and Natural Tresses

This post is going to be all over the place but hopefully it will come full circle in the end. I am currently sitting under my inflatable hair dryer as I attempt my first roller set on my nearly year old locs, OMG how time flies. I usually wouldn't be arsed to curl my hair but I am in a wedding in a few weeks and I have to sort out a hairstyle. If I had my length that I had with my traditional locs the updo would be easy for sheezy, but hair at this length in sisterlocs that are not sealed at the ends is proving to be a challenge.
