How I Planned My Trip to Japan

Voucher for my Japan Rail Pass

I'm a planner, much to the annoyance of some of my friends and family, the "go with the flow" mantra never sat well with me. Call it long term trauma from being the only and eldest girl, but I have always been the overly responsible one, highly skeptical, asking tons of questions until I felt satisfied. Right or wrong, I also apply this level of due diligence to travel. Before I land in a new country I need to know the national emergency number (because 911 is not universal), what the tipping policy is in that region of the world and whether or not they are "tolerant" of Black folks (yes, people still have to think about this in 2012).

Helenekilde Badehotel: A Charming Seaside Retreat

Frost on a window, brutal yet beautiful

Winter recently took an uninvited turn for the worse in Northern Europe. Until last week, the weather, for the most part, was mild and pleasant, then suddenly the situation escalated to damp and freezing. With no prospect of acceptable temperatures until Spring, the cold seemed to be magnified. The drabness coupled with a hard crash landing back into reality after my amazing Christmas holiday left me destined for winter depression.

The Forgotten Art of Travel and A Louis Vuitton Hotel Label Postcard Box Giveaway

Vintage suitcase with labels from word travels (source)

The image of an antique steamer trunk covered in hotel labels has always been the ultimate symbol of travel for me. I think of the Golden Age of travel, when different modes of transportation made the unreachable finally reachable. During this time hotel labels were in high fashion and served as a memento of one's past journeys.

Reykjavik, Iceland: The Perfect Escape

Iceland's capital is a progressive, vibrant city despite its provincial village-like appearance

My favorite trip of 2011 had to be my weekend escape to Reykjavik, Iceland, the world's northernmost capital city.  Reykjavik is the largest and most cosmopolitan city in Iceland. Despite it's provincial appearance, Reykjavik has been dubbed the "the nightlife capital of the north", with clubs that stay open past 4 a.m. Don't be put off if you aren't much of a raver, the city and its surrounding areas offer a mixture of nature, adventure and relaxation. The solo female traveler should feel more than comfortable in Reykjavik, the city is virtually crime free and almost everyone speaks perfect English.

New Years Eve in Copenhagen...and Around the World

The songs in the video are from Pond5.com The first is called Inspiration Clouds and the second one is called Bells Present Main :)

Am I the only person who still pauses when they have to write down 2012 on a piece of paper?

2012 got off to a great start and it seems to be flying by. My New Years was really amazing! I spent it with the Panda and the boys in Copenhagen, Denmark. I felt so much love and warmth during my week in Copenhagen that it was hard for me to return to Berlin. Our New Years was a fusion of both old and new, a little bit of them and a little bit of me. I introduced the family to raclette (SUCCESS!!), and they introduced me to Kransekake, which is a marzipan ring cake that we made from scratch. (Talk about cultural immersion!) It was all in all, great multi-culti family fun...aside from me almost losing an arm during a rocket mishap. :) So I'm here with all my limbs and digits with a heart yearning to see my Panda and his cubs again.

For The Love of Travel: Black Female Solo Traveler

black female snorkeling in australia

As I mentioned before traveling never used to be a priority of mine. I covered thousands of miles within the United States and North America and still hadn't experienced most of the diversity within my country of citizenship. I didn't see a need to go abroad to explore different landscapes and cultures. Not only was the desire missing, there was no money to make it happen.

The little money left over after taking care of necessities wasn't enough for a transatlantic pleasure trip. Rustic adventure travel on the cheap was not an option. From my perspective, growing up in the car jacking capital of the world, where crack vials and crime tape were neighborhood staples was adventure enough for me. If I went on vacation I wanted to stay in a proper hotel with proper amenities and private rooms. In America I spoke the language, I was comfortable, and had an amazing support system. I believed I had a good understanding of the world around me and felt no immediate need to expand my universe.
My first time in Europe was a total fluke. I worked for an office that occasionally sent staff overseas for 6 months at a time. I went to London, England, proved myself indispensable and the opportunity grew into a three year assignment. Once based in London, the Atlantic was behind me, I suddenly had access to amazing cities that were only a few hours and a couple quid away. I also had friends, family and colleagues encouraging me to take advantage of my position and see more of the world.
A trip to Paris on the Eurostar was my first city break. I never understood just how close things were on mainland Europe. Four hours on a train in America, and I would barely get to another state, nevertheless into a totally different country with a different language. This was amazing. I could leave on Friday, fly back on Monday morning in time for work complete with a new stamp on my passport. I had reached the stage 5 level of wanderlust within 8 months.
I grew to love the travel experience. Not the packing or the flying but actually breathing the air of a different city. Each country had it's own history, cuisine, fashion and nightlife, and I was open to it all. Surprisingly it wasn't just me learning about a new culture but also about people learning about me. I often found myself being an ambassador for Black American women, conversing with people that had only seen the often negative portrayals of us in mainstream media. Many of my travels were not only eye opening experiences for me, but for the people around me.
Don't get me wrong, my adventures were not purely in the interest of science and cultural exchange. I partied in the way of the locals, stayed in lovely boutique hotels and ate some really great food. Traveling for me continues to be a luxury that I would never want to live without. I recognize it as a priority and I budget and plan accordingly for it. Currently my short haul options are running out so I will soon venture to South East Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. Even after visiting 32 countries and having lived in 3 different countries I feel like I haven't even scratched the surface. Stay tuned!!

Budget Airline Tickets and Hidden Fees

On the heels of the Twitter “beef” between Lily Allen and Ryanair I thought I would take a break from posting about super fun adventures and write something a bit more practical for my readers. People are seduced by the prices offered by discount airlines such as RyanAir and Easyjet for short haul flights, failing to read the fine print. Budget airlines are experts at cutting cost and levying them onto the end customer. Be aware when purchasing your ticket that the company does not intend for that to be the final sale. They find simple ways to squeeze money out of your pockets.

About Berlin: Karneval der Kulturen ( The Carnival of Cultures) Berlin, Germany

The great thing about Berlin is that there is always something to do. This Pentacost weekend is sure to be an amazing one, it's time for the annual Karneval der Kulturen in Berlin!!! The carnival aims to celebrate and draw attention to the large international presence in Berlin, 30% of the 3.4 million Berliners are either first or second generation immigrants. Turkish immigrants make up the largest ethic minority but there are people from all over the world that live here, including a sizeable American population.

Sneak Peek: Malmo Sweden and Eric Benet

Just wanted to post something totally random and really quick!
I am in Copenhagen this weekend visiting the Panda Bear (that is my Danish boyfriend for you newbies), anywoo, we planned on taking a short trip to Malmo, Sweden to see the Marcel DuChamp exhibit at the Modern Museum. Malmo is only a 30 minute train ride from the Copenhagen Main Train Station. When I got to Copenhagen on Thursday night, the Panda Bear surprised me, planning an overnight trip to Malmo, and we would be staying at the Renaissance Malmo Hotel. (aww) What a treat, the hotel was super cute and VERY colorful.

Boutique Hotel Review: The George, Hamburg Germany

Lobby of The George

Well designed hotels are my Achille's heel. I pride myself in being a cheapanista when travelling but one thing I rarely skimp on are my accomodations. One way of getting luxury at an affordable price are small boutique hotels. Boutique hotels, also known as design hotels, usually focus around a common theme in an intimate setting (less than 50 rooms) and often feature personalized service offerings. Boutique hotels are rarely affiliated with larger chains which means the designers can be more liberal. From the moment you walk in the lobby it is clear that you are walking into someone's vision and not just another mass produced copy and paste job. It is quite possible to over design a hotel, but perfection is achieved in the details, balancing aesthetically pleasing elements with function.

Cooking Class in Istanbul Turkey : Video

My youngest brother and I went on a short city break to Istanbul Turkey in March.
Many people don't believe that he is my brother but here is the proof! :) Look at me in my faux fur. bow!
Before
After
It was his first time in Europe and I advise anyone coming across the pond for more than 4 days to try and hit two big cities. So he saw Berlin and Istanbul in one week. We did alot of sight-seeing and walking OMG. The city was the perfect blend of Eastern and Western culture. We were mobbed by people who had never seen Black Americans before and got scammed by a cab driver. It was an interesting trip but the highlight was this cooking course offered by Selin at Turkish Flavours She was an amazing host and made us feel right at home. She also gave us hints on where and what to eat. Here is a video of our course with a some pictures of Istanbul and the food we made. Enjoy

Be sure to stay tuned for more about my trip to Istanbul and some of my other trips around the globe.

Clever Luggage Tags

Considering that black is the most popular luggage color, it is important to make sure your bag can be easily identified at the baggage claim. Many travellers resort to all sorts of antics in an effort to give their luggage a unique identifier : expensive monograming, retna burning rainbow colored elastic belts, or tackier methods like tieing articles of clothing around the handle. I have seen it all.
Luckily my solu

Wanderlust

Wanderlust - noun - very strong or irresistible impulse to travel
Image from whatevermethinks tumblr

I am a self diagnosed travel junkie. I have a problem, I like to walk the earth in my spare time. It wasn't always like this, I remember shortly after college a good friend of mine lived and worked in Paris, France. She would encourage me to visit and I simply had zero interest. Hell, growing up in New Jersey, California was foreign enough, who had time for berets and smelly cheeses. I'LL PASS! In my twenty something year old mind I had all I needed right there in big ol' awesome America. Family, friends, electricity, running water and indoor plumbing, America was the bomb and anything else was uncivilized.
